Performance Audits

Find What’s Slowing You Down

Slow sites lose customers. Every second of delay increases bounce rates and kills conversions. But “slow” isn’t useful feedback. You need specifics: which pages, which metrics, which bottlenecks. A performance audit gives you those answers.

Why performance matters

Speed affects everything. User experience, conversions, search rankings. The data is clear.

The business impact

  • 53% of mobile users abandon sites that take longer than 3 seconds to load
  • Each additional second of load time reduces conversions by 7%
  • Google uses Core Web Vitals as a ranking factor for search results
  • Slow sites cost money through higher bounce rates and lower engagement

Beyond speed scores

A fast site feels professional. Users trust it more. They browse longer, click more, and convert better. Performance isn’t just a technical metric. It’s part of your brand experience.

What we measure

We run comprehensive performance testing using sitespeed.io, measuring everything that affects user experience.

Core Web Vitals

Google's key metrics for page experience:
MetricWhat It MeasuresGood Score
LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)How fast main content loadsUnder 2.5s
FID (First Input Delay)How fast page responds to interactionUnder 100ms
CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift)How much content shifts during loadUnder 0.1

Understanding the metrics

LCP (largest contentful paint) measures when the main content becomes visible. If your hero image or headline takes 4 seconds to appear, users perceive the site as slow regardless of what happens after.

FID (first input delay) measures responsiveness. When a user clicks a button, how long before something happens? Heavy JavaScript can block the main thread and make your site feel unresponsive.

CLS (cumulative layout shift) measures visual stability. When ads load late or images resize, content jumps around. Users click the wrong thing. Forms shift. It’s frustrating and unprofessional.

Additional metrics

Beyond Core Web Vitals, we measure:

  • Total page load time
  • Time to interactive (TTI) – when page becomes fully usable
  • First contentful paint (FCP) – when first content appears
  • Speed index – how quickly content is visually populated
  • Total page weight – combined size of all resources
  • Request count – number of HTTP requests
  • Resource breakdown – images, scripts, stylesheets, fonts

How it works

Step 1: page selection

We identify up to 20 key pages to audit. We prioritize high-traffic pages, landing pages, and pages critical to conversions. You review our selection and can suggest changes before we begin.

Step 2: performance testing

We run sitespeed.io against every selected page in a standard testing environment. This gives consistent, reproducible results. If you need throttled testing (simulating slower connections), we can enable that.

Step 3: report generation

We compile findings into a detailed report with:

  • Metric scores for each page tested
  • Pass/fail status against Core Web Vitals thresholds
  • Performance bottlenecks identified
  • Severity rankings from critical to minor
  • Recommendations for optimization opportunities
  • Executive summary for stakeholders

We don’t include competitor benchmarks. The report focuses on your site’s performance and what can be improved.

Step 4: walkthrough call

You get a 30-minute call where we:

  • Explain the metrics in plain language
  • Identify the biggest optimization opportunities
  • Help you prioritize what to fix first
  • Discuss implementation options
  • Answer questions about the report

What you get

The report

  • Up to 20 pages audited
  • Core Web Vitals scores
  • All performance metrics
  • Bottleneck identification
  • Severity rankings
  • Optimization recommendations
  • Executive summary

The walkthrough

  • 30-minute video call
  • Metrics explained clearly
  • Prioritization guidance
  • Implementation discussion
  • Recording provided

Common performance issues

Performance problems usually fall into a few categories:

Image issues

  • Unoptimized images (wrong format, oversized)
  • Missing lazy loading
  • No responsive images (serving desktop images on mobile)

Script issues

  • Too much JavaScript
  • Render-blocking scripts
  • Unused code shipped to browsers

Server issues

  • Slow server response time
  • No caching headers
  • Missing compression (gzip/brotli)

Third-party issues

  • Slow external scripts (analytics, chat widgets, ads)
  • Too many third-party requests
  • Blocking third-party resources

The audit identifies which of these affect your site and how severely.

What this audit covers (and what it doesn’t)

Included

  • Performance testing with sitespeed.io
  • Core Web Vitals measurement
  • Full performance metrics suite
  • Up to 20 pages
  • Standard testing environment
  • Throttled testing (on request)
  • Detailed report with recommendations
  • 30-minute walkthrough call

Not included

  • Competitor performance comparison
  • Server-side profiling
  • Database query optimization analysis
  • CDN configuration audit
  • Code fixes or implementation
  • Ongoing monitoring

Why no competitor comparison? We focus entirely on your site. Knowing a competitor is faster doesn’t tell you how to improve. The report identifies your specific bottlenecks and optimization opportunities.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about performance audits.

PageSpeed Insights gives you a quick score for one page at a time. Our audit tests up to 20 pages systematically, with detailed metrics, identifies patterns across your site, and includes a walkthrough to explain what matters most.

The audit measures performance metrics that affect both desktop and mobile. We test in a standard environment. If you want specific mobile throttling (simulating 3G or slow 4G connections), we can enable that.

The audit will reveal that. Slow server response time (Time to First Byte) shows up clearly in the metrics. If hosting is the bottleneck, we’ll identify it and discuss options.

We look at your site structure and focus on:

  • Homepage and main landing pages
  • High-traffic content pages
  • Key conversion paths
  • Pages with heavy content (images, video, interactive elements)

You review our selection before we start and can request changes.

You decide next steps:

  • Fix issues yourself using the report as a guide
  • Request a quote for okto-digital to implement optimizations
  • Prioritize based on impact and tackle improvements over time

We’re happy to quote optimization work separately.

Core Web Vitals are a Google ranking factor. Improving them can help SEO, especially if you’re currently failing thresholds. But performance is one of many ranking factors. Don’t expect dramatic ranking changes from performance alone.

Lab data comes from controlled testing environments (like our audit). Field data comes from real users via Chrome User Experience Report. Lab data is consistent and reproducible. Field data reflects actual user experience but varies based on devices and connections. Our audit provides lab data. Google Search Console shows your field data.

We recommend auditing after major site changes, redesigns, or when adding new functionality. For sites with active development, quarterly audits help catch performance regressions before they impact users. If you’re seeing conversion drops or bounce rate increases, an audit can identify whether performance is the cause.

Yes. Third-party scripts (analytics, chat widgets, ad networks, social buttons) are often the biggest performance killers. They run on your page but you don’t control them. They can block rendering, consume bandwidth, and slow everything down. The audit identifies which third-party resources are hurting performance.
