Accessibility audits

Find barriers blocking your users

Accessibility problems are invisible to most site owners. You don’t see the broken keyboard navigation. You don’t notice the missing labels. You don’t experience the frustration of users who can’t complete basic tasks. An accessibility audit makes these barriers visible so you can fix them.

Why Accessibility matters

Accessibility isn’t just about compliance. It affects your business in ways you might not expect.

The numbers

  • 15-20% of people have some form of disability
  • 71% of users with disabilities leave websites that are difficult to use
  • Accessible sites rank better because accessibility and SEO share many requirements
  • Legal claims are rising with accessibility lawsuits increasing year over year

Beyond compliance

Even if you’re not legally required to be accessible, removing barriers helps everyone. Captions help users in noisy environments. Keyboard navigation helps power users. Clear contrast helps users on cheap monitors or in bright sunlight. Good accessibility is good usability.

What we test

We run automated scans using pa11y against the latest WCAG guidelines.

WCAG Coverage

StandardLevels Tested
WCAG 2.1A, AA, AAA
WCAG 2.2A, AA, AAA

Most audits only test Level A and AA. We test all three levels to give you the complete picture, including enhanced requirements that improve usability for everyone.

Understanding WCAG levels

Level A (minimum): Basic requirements. Failing these means major barriers exist. Examples: images need alt text, pages need titles, forms need labels.

Level AA (standard): The most common compliance target. Includes contrast requirements, resize support, and consistent navigation. Most legal requirements reference Level AA.

Level AAA (enhanced): Highest standard. Includes sign language for video, extended audio descriptions, and stricter contrast ratios. Few sites achieve full AAA compliance, but individual criteria can improve usability significantly.

Common issues we find

Automated testing catches the majority of accessibility problems, including:

  • Missing alt text on images
  • Poor color contrast between text and background
  • Missing form labels that confuse screen readers
  • Broken heading hierarchy that disrupts navigation
  • Missing ARIA attributes on interactive elements
  • Keyboard traps where focus gets stuck
  • Missing skip links forcing users through repetitive navigation
  • Inaccessible PDFs and documents

How it works

Step 1: page selection

We identify up to 20 key pages to audit. We focus on high-traffic pages, conversion paths, and pages with complex functionality. You review our selection and can suggest changes before we begin.

Step 2: automated scanning

We run pa11y scans against every selected page, testing against both WCAG 2.1 and 2.2 at all conformance levels. The automated scan catches markup errors, missing attributes, contrast failures, and structural problems.

Step 3: report generation

We compile findings into a detailed report with:

  • Issue descriptions explaining what’s wrong
  • Screenshots showing where problems occur
  • Severity rankings from critical to minor
  • Recommendations for how to fix each issue
  • Executive summary for stakeholders

We don’t include code snippets or step-by-step implementation guides. The report tells you what’s broken and why it matters. If you want us to implement fixes, we’ll provide a separate quote.

Step 4: walkthrough call

You get a 30-minute call where we:

  • Explain the findings in plain language
  • Help you prioritize what to fix first
  • Discuss implementation options
  • Answer questions about the report

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about accessibility audits.

Automated testing catches 30-50% of accessibility issues. It’s excellent for identifying markup errors, missing attributes, and contrast failures. It won’t catch everything a manual audit would, but at €99, it’s a fast and affordable way to identify major barriers.

If you need comprehensive testing including manual screen reader and keyboard navigation testing, we can scope that as a custom project.

We test everything regardless. You’ll receive results for all levels and both standards. Focus on what’s relevant to your compliance requirements and treat the rest as improvement opportunities.

We look at your site structure, analytics (if available), and focus on:

  • Homepage and main landing pages
  • Key conversion paths (signup, checkout, contact)
  • Pages with complex functionality (forms, interactive elements)
  • High-traffic content pages

You review our selection before we start and can request changes.

You decide next steps:

  • Fix issues yourself using the report as a guide
  • Request a quote for okto-digital to implement fixes
  • Prioritize based on severity and tackle issues over time

We’re happy to quote implementation work separately.

The automated scan tests the rendered HTML, which includes responsive layouts. However, we don’t do separate mobile-specific testing or test on actual mobile devices with assistive technology.

WCAG 2.2 (released 2023) adds nine new success criteria on top of 2.1. The additions focus on mobile accessibility, cognitive accessibility, and improved authentication requirements. We test against both to ensure you’re meeting the latest standards.

The audit identifies issues against WCAG standards, which is what most accessibility laws reference. However, we’re not lawyers and don’t provide legal advice. The report documents what we found and recommends fixes. Consult with legal counsel about specific compliance requirements for your jurisdiction.

We recommend auditing after major site changes, redesigns, or CMS updates. For actively developed sites, annual audits help catch issues that creep in over time. If you’re making continuous changes, consider building automated accessibility testing into your development workflow.
