It started in spreadsheets. As participation grew into the thousands, the process became impossible to manage. The organization needed a system that could handle it all.
About the project
Bike to Work is a campaign promoting sustainable transport across Slovakia. Every year, during June, it organizes a nationwide challenge that encourages employees from public institutions and private companies to ride bicycles to work instead of driving. The initiative combines health, ecology, and community, all powered by a digital system that tracks participation and impact.
To support this complex, nationwide challenge, okto—digital designed and developed a comprehensive digital platform. The solution included a website with an e-commerce integration to manage merchandise sales and sponsor contributions, alongside a sophisticated, custom-built system for tracking competitor rides.
Website & E-commerce
The website is fundamentally designed to drive engagement and enrollment. Every year, the refreshed design attracts new competitors and energizes existing ones. Critically, the platform actively boosts registration by providing real-time visibility. Cities and teams registering are displayed instantly, creating a powerful sense of momentum and peer pressure that encourages local enrollment. Through seamless API communication with the core tracking system, the site displays real-time numbers of rides and kilometers cycled by competitors across different cities, companies, and teams, fostering healthy competition across the nation.
To monetize and manage the challenge’s operations efficiently, okto—digital integrated a high-performance e-commerce solution built on WooCommerce, facilitating the purchase of official campaign gear. Crucially, this system features a seamless integration with the Pohoda accounting software. This allows the organizers to effortlessly manage thousands of daily orders and complex payment flows, ensuring financial transparency and administrative ease.
"Creativity, speed and reliability. The key benefits of okto—digital have been helping us develop our Bike to Work campaign for more than 10 years. During that long period of cooperation, they have repeatedly convinced us that our initial choice of partner for IT solutions was the right one."
A complete platform for participation
okto—digital designed and built a digital ecosystem that runs the entire competition from start to finish. The system covers multiple registration layers (province, institution, company, team, and user), manages user profiles, and records daily rides and vehicle types. Each entry automatically contributes to CO₂ savings calculations, gamified badges, and live leaderboards.
